At home with a moth orchid
Light, roots and watering for Phalaenopsis. Check the label first so the advice matches your orchid.

Phalaenopsis, also called a moth orchid, is a familiar sight in homes. These tips are for that group. Check the care needs separately if the label gives a different name.
A bright spot away from direct heat
Bright, filtered light is a good place to start. At a window, watch for strong sun, hot glass and sharp changes in temperature or airflow.
Look at the roots and the mix
Moth orchids need air around their roots. Bark and moss dry at different rates, so feel the growing medium before watering. When it needs a drink, water well and let it drain completely.
Keep water out of the centre of the leaves and empty any water that collects in the outer pot. Check whether the mix is breaking down or the plant needs more room before replacing healthy growing material.
When flowering is over
Keep caring for the leaves and roots after the flowers fall. Look at the spike and the condition of the plant before deciding whether to trim it.
