A closer look
On a true Ruscus plant, the flat parts that look like leaves are modified stems. Several kinds are sold as florist’s ruscus, so ask to see the bunch if you need a particular shape.
Choose a vase
A medium opening shows the length of the stems. Trim them shorter for a snug border around the main flowers.
Get the stems ready
Strip anything below the waterline and recut the stems with secateurs. Keep sharp tips or berries away from children and pets.
Water, light and temperature
These are cut stems for arranging. For fresh stems, start with a clean vase, clear anything below the waterline and choose a cool spot away from direct sun and heat. Top up as needed, change cloudy water and remove spent flowers. Vase life depends on the condition of the stems and the room.
