A pot that looks good and fits your plant

Decide whether you’re planting straight in the pot or slipping the nursery pot inside. Measure the space inside.

A planting pot holds the mix and the roots. A decorative outer pot hides the nursery pot and may have no drainage hole. That difference matters when you choose.

What should you measure?

For an outer pot, compare its inside diameter and height with the nursery pot. Include the widest part of the rim. For direct planting, look at the root ball and what the plant needs. A picture can give you a sense of the style. The measurements tell you whether it fits.

Where will the water go?

A planting pot needs a way for excess water to drain. With a solid outer pot, lift the nursery pot out to water and put it back once it has finished draining. Check the bottom for standing water.

Give the roots the right amount of room

A pot much larger than the root ball can keep the mix wet for longer. The material affects how quickly it dries too. Choose for your plant and the place it will grow as well as for looks.

Check the item page to see whether the pot is included. If the size or drainage details are unclear, ask us before choosing.
