Finding out what you\u2019re growing helps you choose the best light, mix and watering routine. A desert cactus and a forest cactus that grows on trees can have quite different needs.<\/p>\n<h2>Match the light to the plant<\/h2>\n<p>Many succulents like a very bright spot. Others prefer filtered light. If your new plant has been growing in shade, introduce it to stronger sun gradually and follow the needs of that species.<\/p>\n<h2>Give excess water a way out<\/h2>\n<p>Choose an airy mix that drains well and a suitable pot. Feel the mix before watering. Drying time depends on the season, the light and the pot.<\/p>\n<h2>Keep an eye on changes<\/h2>\n<p>Make a note of when you water and how the mix felt. If the plant grows unusually long, softens or changes colour, check its growing conditions. Colour alone can have several explanations.<\/p>\n<p>Use this as a starting point if you\u2019re unsure which plant you have.
